Hi, I am new to this forum. I just 'inherited' a Case 580 Backhoe-Loader.
I am not sure the exact model, I think it is either a 580 or 580B. I found a table that will tell me the model based on the serial number, but I cannot find the serial number. I thought it was supposed to be on the steering column, but there is nothing. Any place else I should be looking? This tractor seems to run pretty good, but the hydraulic system is full of water and most of the hoses are bad, and many of the hydraulic cylinders are leaking. I am going to attempt to rebuild all of this stuff, and then I am going to build a garage, workshop, and swimming pool.
This could be a life-long endeavor, so wish me luck! If i remember right, its on the right hand side of the steering column, easier to view from the ground than the operators station. Those cylinders aren't too bad to rebuild, and the kits are cheap. There's a couple different versions of some of those cylinders so when you get kits they will want to know what type of rod wiper seal it has. When in doubt take pictures. This is a great place to get seal kits from. Call and talk to them, they know older case backhoes.
The water in the hydraulics most likely got in around those leaky cylinders. I've been there, done that before. Drain all the hydraulic oil and repack all the leaky cylinders and you'll be in good shape. You may be able to at least determine if it is a 580, or 580B by using the engine serial number. At least if it is the original block.
I've attached a picture, if you haven't already found it. Located on the right side, right behind the oil filter.
580's engine block numbers started around 2639536. 580B's started at 2711005, according to the Case Construction parts site.
Here is a link to it: 1. Place your cursor on 'parts and service', in menu at the top of the page. ( It's pretty small print) A drop down menu will appear.
Select 'Search for parts', and click on it. Type in '580',where it says 'model', on the next page that appears, and all the 580 models appear. Select your choice on whichever 580 model you wish, then you can drill on down, selecting serial numbers for engine castings, part numbers, etc. You could probably narrow it down further by looking up certain casting/part numbers, such as you found on the steering column.
There should be a S/N on the hoe too. Probably on the control tower. There should be casting numbers on some of the hyd. Cylinders, if that tag is missing.

I also am wondering what the difference is between the k and super k. Also did they make any with a turbo? I have only seen a few on line and did not know if it was factory or not?
I am looking at a 96 but have not seen any others with that year. If anyone could give me a serial no.
Break for the years I would really appreciate it. Also where are the problem areas on the k series and/or years to avoid.
Looking for 4x4 for sure the rest is optional, but would prefer a cab for snow removal! Posted 4/4/2006 17:59 (#2633 - in reply to #2630) Subject: RE: 580k years of production I have a 580K but it has no serial number on it. It has no blower, but has extenda hoe, 4wd.
And clam shell bucket. Also cab with heat but no air. Like the cab, as you said for winter time, and you can open it up enough to stay comfortable in summer.
I looked a long time to find an older one with the clam shell or 4 in 1 bucket. It is great for farm use, picking up post, trees, fence, etc. I would really not want one with out it and having it, it saves alot of labor in clean up jobs. Case 580 Super E Weight
Inwood, WV You sure that is a 1996 unit? Ten year-old memory is a little fuzzy, but I believe the L series came out in 1995, the K models were built from about 1987 to about 1994. There were basically two versions of the K's, then the Super K was the last version built. The early K's have yellow fenders on all models and lug bolts that screw into the axle flange, they have the older style transaxle that is synchronized in 3 and 4 only. Tough tranny in my opinion.
Another way to tell, the loader control comes out of the front console beside the steering wheel and the 4 speed lever comes up from the floor to your right. The later K's had the Maxxum rear-end, with a fully synchronized 4 speed. The shifter was on the console to the right. X-plane crj 200 update.
These had brown fenders on the cab models and lug nuts. The Super K was similar to the later K's, I cannot recall the differences between them, but it was relatively minor. There was a Super K turbo, it should say turbo right on the side of the machine.
I have never seen a turbocharged K, doesn't mean they don't exist, Case's literature listed an altitude compensating turbo as an option. Can't recall any recurring problem areas on those Case hoes. Case/Cummins engine, gear pump/open center hydraulics, not a whole lot to go wrong. No more than usual anyways. Sorry, I do not have a serial number break.

While you are at www.machinerytrader.com check out the stolen equipment page, specially on page 2 half way down, its still missin'. Nw pa any one know where to buy some replacement fenders for a later model with brown fenders.Years of loading salt have kinda ruined the ones that came with it. Also what kind of job would that be???
Looks like a lot of work to replace them. Thanks Bob Cen Mi Posted 4/5/2006 17:43 (#2874 - in reply to #2667) Subject: thanks dustin Just the type of knowledge I was looking for. I had my doubts that the machine was a 96 but thought I would look a little closer. Also where is the sn tag located? Does any one know about new fenders as the other poster noted? Most I have seen are rotted out at the bottom of the glass on r, l, and rear.
Are they bolted in or welded to the window frame? Thanks again Bob. Posted 4/5/2006 19:45 (#2892 - in reply to #2874) Subject: RE: 580K Serial Number Tag Inwood, WV Serial Number Tag.
I just bought, today, my first backhoe - a Case 580 Super King. Salesman said it is a 1994 model, but when I got on the internet and started looking for a manual and there seems to be some confusing info. My serial number is JJG017 etc etc. I just read that serial numbers beginning with 17 started in 1988. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?
According to some info I read the manual for a serial number beginning with 17 was published in 1988 - My check won't clear til Monday morning, so I could use some help on this ASAP!! If I've bought a model earlier than 1994 I want to get back to the dealer for some serious adjustments in the price! My 580K is a 1990, and my S/N starts at 27. D3 equipment, is a Case dealer in California.
They have a great website, where you can see a complete illustrated parts list of your machine with every part number. I believe they also show all the manuals.
From the main page, click 'parts and service' than click on 'parts for Case CE.' Than, enter your model number. There is a difference with serial numbers below JJG020000 and above JJG020000. This might be where the Phase 3 comes in. My 580K is a phase 3, and my S/N is JJG027XXX. (I cant remember the last 3 digits). Hope this helps.
